World Heritage Centre in Lauwersoog runs on ARBO pumps
Since 25 April 2025, Europe has added an extraordinary seal hospital: the brand-new World Heritage Centre (WEC) in Lauwersoog.
After decades in Pieterburen, the seal centre has found a modern, sustainable home here - on the edge of the Wadden Sea, in the middle of the seal's own habitat.
Visitors can come face to face with seals in recovery there, but behind the scenes there is another important story taking place. Because for the care of these animals, a well-functioning water balance is vital.
Behind every basin there is top-level technology running
The new seal hospital is equipped with several intensive care units, an operating room, an intakeroom and 21 basins where seals can recuperate responsibly. To keep the water in these basins in top condition, several Life Support Systems (LSS) were
chosen - supplied by Aqua-Teknik from Denmark. They chose ARBO pumps for their durable, quiet and seawater-resistant properties.

A total of 8 pumps have been installed, with capacities ranging from 6 to 300 m³/h
Why our pumps come into their own here:
- High efficiency and low energy consumption, so sustainable in use
- Solid polypropylene: sound-absorbing and chemical-resistant
- Fully corrosion-resistant with long-term exposure to seawater - essential for animal welfare
- Low motor power without compromising performance
During a recent work visit, we inspected the entire system after commissioning. The system is functioning excellently and contributes daily to a clean, safe environment for sheltering seals.
Technology with a soft side
In projects like this, innovation and care come together. We are proud that our pumps contribute to animal welfare as well as sustainable water management - quietly in the background, but indispensable in practice.
